So I was watching television the other day and I saw a commercial about dental indemnity insurance.  I pride myself being knowledgeable and on top of changes in insurance policies but I have to be honest I had no idea what it was.  So I did some research and here is what I found out.

Dental indemnity insurance is another way to call a traditional insurance policy. When you think of the typical insurance plan, you’re likely thinking of dental indemnity insurance (aka Fee for Service).  The way it works is that you have to meet a deductible before your insurance company starts paying for anything. So, for example, if your deductible is $500.00, you’ll need to pay for the first $500 of dental treatment before your coverage kicks in. Once your coverage kicks in, your insurance company will pay a percentage of the costs.

So your goal is to find a policy that has the smallest deductible.  There is really no point in getting a policy with a high deductible since you get no benefits out of it until you pay that high deductible amount.  But insurance companies are not dumb.  Dental indemnity policies with low deductibles will cost you a higher monthly premium rate.  Don’t forget they are in the business to make money.  So it’s a balancing act between lower deductible versus lower monthly payments.

So with this type of policy you can seize some control over how the policy will benefit you.

Dental Insurance for Individuals are meant for individual person looking for an effective insurance plan to curb their dental health care cost. Dental insurance for individuals are immensely popular because it is enabling individuals to get a control on the spiraling cost of dental health care.  Individuals can get coverage without a employer sponsoring a program and are available for self employed individuals.  It is no secret that dental care is extremely costly.  The cost for a small procedure or a surgery can really hit your pocket book.  In most cases, it can leave you struggling for several months under debt paying for its cost. It’s a no brainer to get dental insurance.

We usually have dental programs because we have neglected our teeth.  I don’t know if its carelessness or laziness or a combination of both.  If you go get your teeth checked regularly, you will be less likely to neglect your teeth because you will be conscious and constantly reminded to brush, flush and to take care of your teeth.

Dental insurance is not expensive.  There are many companies that provide dental insurance for individuals. Having a dental insurance is extremely important because the cost of health care is increasing and dental care is no exception.  Having dental insurance will help cover for unexpected emergencies in the future.  There are many different types of dental insurance plans that cover different aspects and different needs.  Nevertheless, they all have some basic points in all dental insurance policies.  For example, generally all the policies cover two teeth cleanings a year.  The cost of individual plan is one of the major considerations at the time of choosing a suitable plan. If you are looking for an affordable dental insurance plan, then it is important that you consult with your dentist prior to picking. Your dentist will be able to tell you the overall condition of your teeth and gums and also advice you regarding the type of policy you should get.  The other common thing is that all dental insurance policies are good for one year only and are renewed annually with you holding the option to terminate.  Each year it is important for you to review the renewal policies because there can be additions or subtraction of benefits from your policy.  What is covered in your plan and what is not depend on how much you pay in premiums. The more you pay, the more services you get when you need them.  Remember, you are paying for future needs.

To make dental insurance plan affordable, insurance companies offer plans with different types of coverage.  Its up to you to choose which services you need and which ones that are not needed.  That is why it is important that you read the policies and figure out which one fits your needs.  Some experts suggest narrowing down your chooses to three policies. Then review and analyze those three coverage and pick the one that fits your needs.  Time your time and don’t rush to a decision.

It doesn’t matter which dental plan you elect to buy as long it covers these four basic things or allows for coverage of these four important things:
1. Can you add new family members

Sure, you might be single now and only need dental insurance for individual, but if you get married or have kids, you need to make sure that you can add people to your dental insurance plan for individual.

2. Treatment outside your network

When you first join, you will be given a list of approved dentist (those that you can see), dental specialists, and facilities. By going to these approved people on your list, you get to take full advantage of your dental insurance benefits, and you will get to minimize your out of pocket expenses. But if go out side and use any dentist outside your list of approved dentist, for any reason, you have pay extra but at least you know you will still get some type of coverage.

3. Basic services and procedures covered

Make sure you plan includes all the services and procedures big and small that you want covered. There is no point in paying for dental coverage that you don’t think you need or want.  Its our money so decide what you want to pay for or not pay for at the start cause changing your policy after you have enrolled may not be easy.

4.  Seeing a dental specialists

Read your policy especially the fine print and make sure that your coverage doesn’t just apply to general dentists.  You are getting dental insurance for both foreseeable and unforeseeable dental coverage.   Like what happens if you are playing softball and before the game, a guy accidentally swing his bat at your face because he didn’t seeing you as he was stretching.  Your teeth got knock out and you need to see a specialist for dentures.  You hate at this time of need to not be covered for dentures.
